Dining for Women
Ladies – It is that busy time of year, but I hope that you will all be able to attend our December Dining for Women meeting at Gail Olsen’s home, 191 Homestead Road. We are gathering on Wednesday Dec. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and one of our favorite events for the holiday season is our Yankee Swap. Bring a wrapped item, value approx. $10, and we will have the often loud and giggly swapping of these gifts and hopefully everyone will take home an item to be enjoyed during the holidays.
Our program for the month of December is AGE Africa, a program designed to provide life-changing opportunities for young women in Malawi. Young girls here face systemic poverty, lack of family and community support, limited educational opportunities, lack of voice and adverse social attitudes. They are often unable to manage the physical and psychological changes that mark adolescent years. Only six percent of girls graduate from high school and fewer than one percent go on to higher education. Over half of all girls drop out of school before age 18 to marry or because of early pregnancy. Twelve percent are married before age 15!!.
Specifically the initiative CHATS (Creating Healthy Approaches to Success) serves 480 young women at eight schools. This is a three year, weekly after school program for adolescent girls designed to build their core life skills while helping them negotiate the challenges of continuing their educations.
